Chapter Eighteen

Shade wrapped the shadow flows around Carla and let them go with her. Only he could see her now, but he turned back to face Fennel instead. He called more power to him. It came easily from the dark flow of the river. Liquid blackness, cocooning him, hiding him. He had no weapon now, no gun, no knife, nothing to fight with besides his bare hands and the midnight flows.

Fennel stepped out onto the cable. "Shadowheart, I know you're there." Once again he spoke in High Aos Si, abandoning his deep Scottish accent for his native tongue. "I can't see you, but I can feel you. Just stop where you are and wait for me. Both of you. We've got to talk about this. You don't know what you're doing. You don't understand the price you'll pay if you enter the Realm."

Shade walked backward until he reached the center of the bridge. Then he stopped and held his ground. If he built a strong enough shadow wall, Fennel might not be able to get past him.

Fennel ran out along the cable like he'd crossed it a thousand times before. He slammed into Shade's wall, and his momentum propelled him back and sideways, flinging him off the bridge except for one hand, which he managed to keep on the support cable.

He swore and swung himself back up onto the main cable. "Let me pass, Shadowheart."

"Sorry no." Shade dropped the shadows hiding him and used the extra power to reinforce his wall. "You don't really understand what's at stake here."

"Really? What's at stake?" Fennel's voice dripped with venom.

Shade's mouth went dry and his hands shook on the support cables. "After Sunblade subjugates all the Aos Si and makes himself High King, he plans a campaign of mass extinction for the humans. Those not killed will be his slaves. And he's winning, don't you see? He's winning and no one can stop him, no one has the power and the experience in battle except His Highness, Athol of the Greenhall. I know he told you not to let Carla come up here, but even he doesn't know what's going on in the world. If he did, surely he would help us."

"No." Fennel shook his head and inched up closer to Shade's wall. "The High King will never let him go. Never."

"But if we just explain what is happening to the King he—"

"No. He won't. They can't. Shadowheart, they can't come back. Not any of them. And if you let Carla go Under the Hill, you'll lose her forever. If you care about her, if you love her at all, you'll go stop her. Right now. Stop her before it's too late."

The vehemence of Fennel's words shattered Shade's resolve and dissipated his wall and the shadows around Carla. Shade turned and fled, but Fennel caught him as soon as his feet touched ground on the far side of the river. He grabbed Shade by the shoulders and forced him to his knees. "You, stay here.
